Disk Cleanup

Free up disk space on your hard drive by running the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows XP.

A computer is a machine, and all machines need periodic maintenance to keep them running in top form. Over time, your computer will begin to slow down and become less responsive because files, and fragments of files, accumulate on your hard drive. Where do these files come from? Just about every time you do anything on your computer a record of it is created somewhere. As your hard drive becomes more full, it takes more time for your computer to find the files that you request.

To start the cleanup process, click on the START button, then go to ALL PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS, then click on Disk Cleanup.

Or, you can get there by using "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" and locating the disk (most likely C:) that you want to clean. Right-click on the drive and then click on Properties from the resulting menu. From the Properties window you want to be in the "General" tab. In the General tab near the middle of the window you'll see a graphical "pie chart" representation of your C: drive. Just to the right of the pie chart is the Disk cleanup button.

Once the cleanup process starts you'll see the window shown below. It may take a while if you haven't cleaned your hard drive before.

Once the cleaning process has completed you'll see the window below. This window will show you the amount of space that you can recover if you choose to delete all of the files in each category selected. You have the option of selecting or de-selecting each category depending on what you choose to delete. You can also view the files by clicking the "View Files" button near the bottom right of the window. I generally select everything down to, but not including, the "Compress old files" category. I try to keep my computer maintained so as not to need to compress any files. Just a personal choice.

Once you are satisfied with your selections click OK and all of the files will be deleted.

That's it!
