Internet Explorer 7
We Hardly Knew Ye!

It looks like Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is quickly being pushed aside now that Internet Explorer 8 is available. It was definitely the most secure version since IE6 with new features designed to help make your World Wide Web experience safer.

It offered much improved protection against fraudulent websites and also let you know when you were on a safe website. It also offered improved privacy and password protection, as well as parental controls if used along with Windows Vista. If you are currently using the new Windows Vista operating system then you are already familiar with IE7.

IE7 helped to prevent "hackers" from doing damage to your computer by offering better protection against the loading of malicious software, "bugs", "worms" and "viruses".

IE7 also brought us a new feature called the "Phishing Filter Service". "Phishing" is an attempt by a hacker to get you to give them sensitive information about yourself, such as usernames, passwords, banking information, and credit card numbers. Phishers generally contact their victims by e-mail or instant messaging. Unwitting victims are then instructed to enter personal details at a fake website that often times looks very much like the real thing. Beware of any correspondence that solicits sensitive information via e-mail or website. Reputable companies do not do business that way.

So how do I tell which version I have?

That's easy enough:

  • Open IE and click on the "Help" button on the menu bar.
  • Then at the bottom of the pop-up menu, click on "About Internet Explorer".
  • The resulting window will show you exactly which version you have.

If you have never experienced IE7, then you are too late! Get IE8!
