Spybot - Search and Destroy

Spybot is a free spyware and adware removal program which works on Microsoft Windows from 95 on up. It scans your computer's hard disk and memory for malicious software (malware). It can fix most common spyware issues and can also protect your privacy by removing "usage tracks" like cookies.

Spybot also allows you to "Immunize" your computer against the installation of spyware before it happens, and although it is not a replacement for an anti-virus program, it can detect some common viruses.

The "TeaTimer" module is an available option, and provides a level of active, real-time protection from undesirable registry changes. The only drawback is you'll be asked constantly to confirm file additions and registry changes by allowing or denying the change.

Updates are released about every week or so. These updates are downloaded from within the software and are then installed automatically.

For technical support, check the website for forums and a support e-mail address.

To proceed, download Spybot now.

Once you've downloaded the executable file and clicked on it, you'll see a typical welcome window where the only thing you can do is click "Next". The next window will ask you where you want to install it and will display the default location.

The third window is the select components window shown below. I choose the "compact installation (no additional languages)" version from the drop-down list just to save time and disk space.

The next window is the "Additional Tasks" window where you can choose to have Spybot guard Internet Explorer against incoming spyware and/or scan your system continuously for potential intruders. You can also choose whether or not to create icons.

Once you have made all of your selections and confirmed them, the software will load as shown below.

Once loaded, you'll be prompted to create a Registry backup. Always a good idea when deleting spyware so you can return the Registry to its previous state if your system becomes unstable.

You'll then be prompted to download any available updates which is also a good idea.

Next, you'll be asked if you want to "Immunize" your system now. Immunization works at the browser level to try and catch spyware as it comes in from the Internet.

Finally, you'll then see the main Spybot S & D page shown below. Click on the "Check for Problems" button to start scanning your computer for spyware.

Be sure to click on the Help button for detailed information on all the features including a tutorial. There's also a section on interpreting the results which is a must read.
