System File Checker

The System File Checker utility can repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows Vista, and also Windows 7.

So How Do I Know If I Have Corrupt Files?

Good question. You may have a file issue if you notice your computer behaving abnormally. Maybe it freezes up and you have to reboot, or it might even crash with a Blue Screen of Death. You may also see messages, especially when you first start up your computer, about a certain .dll file either being missing or corrupt. If you experience any such things, the System File Checker utility may be able to repair the problem by scanning for missing or corrupt Windows files.

Let's Get Started

As I have stated before, with Windows systems there are always several ways of getting to the same place. No exception here. Here is a fairly simple path you can take:

Click on the Start button in the lower left-hand corner and type the word COMMAND in the Search box as shown below.

vista start window

Next, right-click on the "Command Prompt" that appears at the top of the Programs list. From the resulting menu, left-click on "Run As Administrator" (required to run this utility). You may be asked for a password or prompted to "allow" this task.

Once the command prompt opens, type "sfc /scannow" next to the C:\> prompt as shown below.

You'll see the scan progress from 1% up to 100%. It's best to have your Vista CD/DVD already loaded in your PC in case it is needed. The scan time will vary depending on your system. 20 minutes or so is a rough estimate. When done, if any file errors were discovered and fixed, you will see a confirmation message at the end of the scan.

A good test would be to restart your system and see if any error messages are still popping up.
