Vista Check Disk

Vista Check Disk is a Windows utility that scans your hard drive for problems. It will also try to repair any problems that it finds, such as bad sectors, lost clusters, and directory errors. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run it.

To get to the Check Disk window, click on the Windows (START) button as shown below. Once there, click on "Computer" to open it.

With Computer open, right-click on Local Disk (C:) and left-click on "Properties" which will bring you to the Properties window shown below. Click on the TOOLS tab.

On the TOOLS tab window, shown below, click on the "Check Now" button under "Error-checking".

At the the next window, put a checkmark in both boxes and click the Start button.

After clicking on the Start button you'll receive the message shown below, "Windows can't check the disk while it's in use." "Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?" Click on the "Schedule disk check" button and restart your computer. The disk check will occur before Windows Vista boots up completely. It could take up to an hour or so depending on the size of your hard drive.
