Vista Firewall

The Windows Vista Firewall can help protect your PC from many types of malware and viruses. If the firewall detects a potential problem, it will block whatever is causing it.

Accessing the Firewall Settings

Click on the Windows button (START)> then the Control Panel> then Windows Firewall. Once open, you will see the General tab, the Exceptions tab, and the Advanced tab. Let's take a look at the General tab first.

The General Tab

On the General tab window, shown below, there are three different settings. The ON and OFF settings speak for themselves, but the "Block All Programs" setting is very useful if you ever need to login to an unsecured Wi-Fi connection. This setting will keep your PC completely protected.

The Exceptions Tab

On the Exceptions tab, shown below, you can view all of the programs that Windows has on its default block list. If you would like to unblock something on the default list, just click the checkbox next to the program name.

You can also add or delete programs from the block list from this tab.

Advanced Tab

On the Advanced tab, shown below, you will see all of the network connections on your system that can be secured by the Firewall. A checkmark next to the network connection means that it is being protected.

Also under the Advanced tab is the "Default Settings" option. If you get confused about your settings, Click the "Restore Defaults" button and you will remove any previous settings changes that have been made and return the Windows Firewall back to the Default configuration.
